The Stone and Copper Ages
The Stone and Copper Ages are two of the most widely studied periods in the Vratsa region. A number of large-scale archaeological investigations of the early Chalcolithic settlements where carried out by Bogdan Nikolov. These included investigations at Kremenitata Mogila near the village of Brenitsa, Lapchovets, near the village of Borovan and Gradishteto near the village of Gradeshnitsa. There the early Chalcolithic culture Gradeshnitsa was discovered, which became known in scientific circles for having some of the the earliest examples of “proto-writing”. Intensive studies were carried out on the late Chalcolithic settlements in the town of Krivodol–Tepeto, in the village of Gorna Kremena–Zaminets, and in the village of Ohoden–Kaleto.
During recent years, the tradition of exploring the Chalcolithic period has been kept up by Georgi Ganetsovski with excavations in the Kremenitata Mogila locality near the village of Brenitsa (together with Evgenia Naydenova from the Historical Museum of Oryahovo), in the Ezeroto locality near Borovan, in the Bresta locality near the village of Altimir, in the Zaminets locality near the village of Gorna Kremena and the Kaleto locality in the town of Mezdra, where in 2008 the “Sanctuary of Tura” was discovered.
In the 1980s, archaeological excavations were carried out by Henrieta Todorova in the Dzhudzhera locality near the village of Rebarkovo, and by Petya Georgieva in the Chukata locality near the village of Galatin. And thus a new archaeological culture was discovered which lasted from the transitional period to the Bronze Age. (4th millennium BC)
